Commemorative exhibition on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the railway in Zagreb and the 100th anniversary of the Zagreb Main Station. The exhibition contained documentation which accompanied the construction of the first railway facility in Zagreb, signal lamps, turnout signal lamps, final signals, railway uniforms, monographs on railway history, photographs of railway buildings, copies of old postcards, a textual presentation of the history of the mentioned anniversaries, envelopes of the first day with the commemorative post-office stamps.

The exhibition was moved from the Zagreb City Library to the premises of the Trnje Library. A glass exhibition area was set up which was adjusted for this purpose. It was precisely this space that was chosen because Trnje has always been closely connected to the railway complex which determined its development into a housing estate for railway employees.

The exhibition documents the development of Tvornica željezničkih vozila Gredelj, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its founding. The most important development segments are documented with the aid of photographs and text on a total of 22 panels. Copies of photographs from the Croatian Railway Museum holdings are exhibited.

Photo documentation conceptually included several thematic wholes: a chronological presentation of the construction of railway tracks in Croatia, the most frequent series of steam locomotives which ran on Croatian tracks, commemorative issues on the history of the railways, the first railway buildings in Zagreb, war damages to railway buildings.
The exhibited copies of photographs and archived material are part of the holdings of the Croatian Railway Museum.


The First Years of the Railways in Istria

The exhibition was thematic and dedicated to the building of the Divača - Pula railway line with the Kanfanar – Rovinj branch line, on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the line. The exhibition attempted to document the first decade of the functioning of railway traffic in Istria. It included the original documents from the building of the track, 20 copies of original photographs and about 100 articles among which were a four-wheeled vehicle, tools for steam locomotive maintenance, an induction telephone and gauging instruments for tracks.

The Railways in Croatia’s Zagorje

A part of the exhibition was borrowed from the Technical Museum in Zagreb and the Railway Modellers Club of Zagreb.
The exhibition was dedicated to the 110th anniversary of Zagorje’s lines. The development of the railway system in Croatia’s Zagorje is presented with the aid of several thematic wholes connected to the construction and maintenance of the lines, with railway vehicles, signal equipment, office equipment and official clothing.




Documentation of Railway History in Dalmatia

The exhibition is a retrospective presentation of the development of the Dalmatia lines from 1877. The presentation is created by exhibiting drawings of the most important infrastructure facilities from the time and the site plans of individual sections of the first tracks. The later development was documented with photographs of the life, work and activities of the Dalmatian railway. Photographs also followed the moments of railway accidents in the region and documented the period when the first diesel locomotives were introduced during the 1960’s. Various items were exhibited including a manual three-wheel vehicle, a hand saw for sawing rails and other tools for track construction, as well as examples of signal and TC devices.


120 Years of the First Dalmatian Lines

The original material from the holdings of the Croatian Railway Museum were exhibited showing the course of the construction of the Siverić - Split and Perković – Šibenik lines, with postcards and photographs with motifs of railway facilities in the Dalmatian region, newspaper articles of accidents on Dalmatian tracks, documentation on the introduction of diesel locomotives, exhibits in the field of signalisation, track construction, dispatch of goods and passengers and office equipment. 

 




125 Years of the Rijeka lines

Celebration of HŽ Day in 1998 marked the 125th anniversary of the Rijeka lines. On this occasion seven thematic exhibitions were presented and this at Zagreb’s Main Station, and at stations in Karlovac, Ogulin, Moravice, Delnice, Rijeka and Opatija-Matulji. They were held in October 1998.

The exhibitions in Zagreb, Ogulin, Delnice and Rijeka contained the copies of original photographs of the construction of the Rijeka lines which during its construction in the 1870’s was photographed by a Viennese photographer J. Löw, and copies of old photographs with railway motifs from the private collections of Krunoslav Tušek and Vladimir Smešny, copies of photographs of Dragutin Staničić of the Rijeka line. Signal devices, old rulebooks and other documents from the Štimac family collection were exhibited in Karlovac; in Moravice there were documents and photographs of Moravice’s railway workers and photographs portraying the history of the Moravice workshop; in Opatija-Matulji there was a collection of railway caps and enlarged photographs of the tourist and railway history of the town.

Exhibition of Historic Material of the Žakanje Railways

The exhibition of historic material on the Žakanje railway was set up to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the construction of the Zagreb - Dugo Selo - Koprivnica – Botovo line. It included about 100 exhibits placed in four rooms. Facsimiles of the most important legal regulations of 1867 and 1868, which enabled the construction of the so-called Žakanje railway line (Zagreb - Dugo Selo - Koprivnica – Zakany line), were in the first two rooms. In the other two rooms there was a selection of photographs and drawings in chronological order documenting the development and modernisation of the line and its facilities, and the development of traction. Models of railway vehicles were also exhibited, including personal documents of railway employees, postcards with railway motifs and a collection of railway clocks.     

   




130 Years of the Žakanje - Zagreb line

The exhibition is a cross-section of the material which was presented at the exhibition in the Koprivnica Town Museum in the scope of the commemoration of HŽ Day 5th Oct. 1999, marking the 130th anniversary of the Zagreb - Dugo Selo - Koprivnica – Botovo line and its planned future development. 10 copies of documents and royal decisions on the construction of the line and 40 photographs were exhibited. 




HŽ between Devastation and Reconstruction

The exhibition gave a chronological portrayal and the disruption of traffic on Croatian lines during the Homeland War showing the specification of direct war damages on HŽ buildings, equipment, etc., and recording the course of works on the reconstruction of railway facilities, emphasising investments amounts used in the reconstruction and showing the dates of the reopening of individual sections of track to traffic. 32 photographs were exhibited with captions.




Documenting the History of the Međimurje Lines

The exhibitions were dedicated to the 140th anniversary of the State Border - Čakovec - Kotoriba – State Border line and the 110th anniversary of the Čakovec - Mursko Središće – State Border line. Every exhibit, with data on the historic course of the construction and development of the line, contained about 30 photographs which illustrate the more important events connected to the development of the line and the everyday work of railway workers. The exhibited material is from the holdings of the Croatian Railway Museum and the private collections of Nikola Veber and Franjo Mlinarić.


Railway Workers and Sports

The exhibition documented the activities of the Zagreb railway sports clubs whose activities began in 1914 with the founding of the Viktorija Railway Workers’ Sports Club. Its later development led to the activities of three Zagreb railway sports societies: Lokomotiva, Sloga and the Željezničar hiking society. The society gathered various clubs from various sports activities such as football, boxing, wrestling, bowling, chess, athletics, rowing, basketball, volleyball, handball, bicycling, table tennis, fencing, rugby and hiking. The exhibition presented photographs, awards and posters, cups and various items of rugby, fencing, hiking and boxing equipment and followed the activities of these sports during 90 years. 130 photographs were exhibited and 50 items including awards and sports equipment.

Railway History – the Driving Force of International Cooperation

The exhibition included 50 photographs documenting the international cooperation of the Croatian Railway Museum with similar institutes: Traffic Museum in Budapest, Hungarian Historic Park and Railway Museum in Ljubljana. It was set up on the occasion of International Museum Day on the theme Museums and Globalisation.


110 Years of the Zagreb Main Station

140 Years of the Railways in Zagreb and Sisak

20 panels size 70 x 100 cm were set up with a selection of photographs of railway stations with lines, and a presentation of copies of articles from daily papers of the second half of the 19th Century on the construction and use of the track, with copies of site plans of the largest stations on the line, copies of documentation on the construction of bridges on the line, copies of parts of the legal regulations connected to the railways in the mid 19th Century, with a chronological presentation of photographs showing traction vehicles used on the track. Various items were exhibited including a manual track tricycle, equipment for track construction, traffic signal lamps, a model of a locomotive series 11, a Morse telegraph device and sign plates from steam locomotives

A Quarter of a Century of the Activities of the Zagreb Marshalling Yard

An exhibition marking the 25th anniversary of the activities of the Zagreb Marshalling Yard. A total of 52 copies of enlarged photographs of which a part was private, borrowed from the first generation of workers of the Zagreb Marshalling Yard, a part was photographed by railway employees Vlatko Lozić, Dragutin Staničić and Ante Krešić, and a part was from the holdings of the Croatian Railway Museum. The exhibition followed the preparations and the construction of track capacities, workshop facilities and other infrastructure facilities from 1967 to the opening to traffic in 1978. The further development, upgrading and modernisation of the system processes, organisation of changes within this system with 10 various expert units, but also social life, cultural and sports activities realised at the Zagreb Marshalling Yard.

Cultural Creative Work of Croatian Railway Workers

The exhibition was set-up along with the International Museum Day on the theme Museums and Non-material Heritage. It was created as a documentary portrayal of the activities of all 12 amateur railway associations in a period of 90 years, from 1914 onwards. Among them were 10 cultural-art railway societies with headquarters in Zagreb, Varaždin, Rijeka, Roč, Moravice, Sisak, Slavonski Brod, Vinkovci Osijek and Split, the Plavo svjetlo Railway Artists Association and the Croatian Railway Esperanto Society.
The exhibition consisted of 17 panels with a total of 205 photographs and newspaper articles, 85 exhibited articles (posters, awards, diplomas, printed monographs, old musical instruments, emblems)




Railway Vehicles – a Part of the Collective Identity of Technical Culture

The exhibition is a cross-section of the most frequent traction vehicles which operated on Croatian lines since they were open to traffic in 1860 until 2005; they included steam locomotives and tilting trains among others. The exhibition contained 16 posters 70 x 100 cm in size which presented the most significant types and series of vehicle, with much data on the construction of the vehicles, their technical characteristics, time and place of operation and photographs of them. What is particularly interesting is that the vehicles were presented under their popular names which are not known to those outside the railways. The exhibition also presented 14 models of railway vehicles from the holdings of the Croatian Railway Museum.
The exhibition was also set up at Croatian railway stations and these include the Zagreb Main Station (18th May – 7th June), and Pula, Rijeka, Zadar, Šibenik, Split and Vinkovci


144 Years of the Zagreb Railways

The exhibition was set up on the occasion of the 144th anniversary of the opening of the Zidani Most - Zagreb - Sisak line in the scope of the Keglić fest 2006 on Črnomerec Town Quarter Day. The exhibition contained about 90 photographs on 20 panels which documented the written analysis of the history of the line from construction of the first infrastructure facilities and buildings and replacement of railway vehicles to larger construction works accomplished during the history of the line. The focus was placed on the Zagreb area, that is, facilities connected to the Zagreb Zapadni kolodvor (West Station) and railway workers who worked in this area. Also exhibited were copies of by-laws from the middle of the 19th Century in connection to the construction of the first line to Zagreb, newspaper articles from the period which followed the construction and opening of the line, expert articles on the development of the line and models of railway vehicles.

The exhibition was set up on the occasion of Internal Museum Day on the theme Museums as the Driving Force behind Social Change and Development. 16 locomotives from the holdings of the Croatian Railway Museum were presented and exhibited as monuments to the technical heritage on Croatian railway stations. As such they influenced social conscience on the value of technical heritage and its effect on technical-technological development




Through the Rijeka Railway Building in the 21st Century

The exhibition includes 20 drawings by Ferenc Pfaff, designer of the Rijeka station building, 5 newspaper articles on the construction of the station from the end of 19th Century, the programme of the opening of the station, photographs from the station’s history and proposals for the refurbishment of the station interior.
The exhibition wished to remind us of the 117 year history of the Rijeka station building (built in 1890), but also to bring to our attention its future and the need for its cohabitation with the present. The exhibition is a contribution to the protection of railway heritage, giving value to its significance and functional harmonisation with contemporary needs.  

 



Wealth of the Croatian Railway Heritage

The exhibition was set up on Zagreb City Day and for this reason it was directed to portraying the history of the railway in the Zagreb area. Items from the museums, libraries and archives were presented. 39 items (signal lamps, railway vehicle models, megaphones, conductors’ bags, official uniforms …) were presented to the public along with drawings of railway facilities, newspaper articles, timetables, photographs and old postcards on 12 panels (100 x 70 cm) showing the development of the railway in Croatia, particularly in Zagreb, and the construction of the more important railway facilities. Also presented were various works of fiction in which the railways appear as a leitmotif.




From Engine-Room to Museum

The exhibition was set up to mark the 115th anniversary of TŽV Gredelj and the former MÁV engine-room. The intention of the exhibition was a historic portrayal of the many factory activities, the architectural value of the oldest factory facilities, a portrayal of the valorisation process and conservationist protection of valuable buildings and machines and to stimulate their preservation in museums by opening more premises for the Croatian Railway Museum exhibitions. The expert and value justifications of this line of thought are suggested by forming exhibitions in workshops, but only for one day since the workshops are in use. 4 steam locomotives, electric locomotives, 4 special track vehicles and 20 panels size were exhibited in their original ambience.

The exhibition was set up to mark the signing of the contract on the replacement of the SS devices at Zagreb Main station which have been in use since 1938. The exhibition included 8 panels size 70 x 100 cm on which the history of these devices was presented through words and pictures, including the manner of working and the place of installation. The exhibition was in Croatian and English.

 




From the Railway History of Podravina

The exhibition is a retrospective of the construction of the so-called Podravina main line from 1870 to 1937. Segments of its history were presented with the aid of 20 items, 11 posters with copies of photographs, postcards and newspaper articles from the time of construction and later use of the line with historical facts in text form.
